About this Project

Layer Elementary fifth graders have been investigating how organisms survive in their environment. The online, immersive program, “WolfQuest” has given our students an experience to learn in a way which was never imagined. Students “became” wolves. After creating a wolf avatar, Wolf Quest allowed our students to learn about wolf ecology by living the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park. Students began by playing independently until they  mastered “the ways of the wolf” such as hunting, marking territory, and protecting young. Then they joined a multiplayer game which allowed them to work in a “pack” and learn group behaviors. As they explored the wilderness, they hunted elk, encountered stranger wolves in a quest to find a mate, found a den, established a territory, raised pups, and defended them from predators such as coyotes, grizzly bears and other stranger wolves.  By experiencing this ecosystem in Yellowstone, they were able to make learning connections about survival and adaptation to other organisms in other ecosystems, such as alligators and bears in a wetland.

Our class went beyond the Wolf Quest immersive environment and lesson extensions to require students to research & synthesize knowledge and understandings by creating a digital product to share with an authentic audience. We wish to share our successful experience of facilitating WolfQuest and student's digital products.

Explore this site to understand why our students are "howling" about this wonderful experience!
